A mainframe computer is a large computer, usually housed in a controlled environment that can support the processing requirements of hundreds and often thousands of users and computer professionals. Mainframe computer is smaller and less powerful than a super computer. Mainframe computer may cost from several hundred thousand dollars up to $10 million.
If you go to work for an airline, a bank, a large insurance company, a large accounting company, a large university, or the social security administration, you may have contact –through your individual workstation –with a mainframe computer.
However, mainframe computer is being purchased less frequently now. Instead, new powerful minicomputer and microcomputer systems –often hooked together in networks –are being used in place of mainframe computer. Mainframe computer is very important and effective in airline or a social security administration.
